Joyful Day!
I
received a card last month with this quote from Emily Dickenson: “We turn not older with the years but newer
every day.” How
yogic-minded is that? Way to go,
Emily! “Newer every day” is exactly what
we experience as we transform our lives with our practice. We find ourselves looking at things in new
and different ways; our bodies transform as the spine and muscles become
stronger and more flexible; our minds and hearts too become stronger and more
open. We look within and explore new territory
and sometimes go right to our edge to find new discoveries about ourselves. Springtime
can be a reminder of this “newer every day” thinking. The ancient earth puts forth new life as
trees blossom with colorful, fragrant buds and fresh lime-green leaves. The pungent smell of freshly mowed wild
onions and new grass fills the air with a tangy hopefulness for all that will
soon be sprouting forth. This newness
of the season is energizing, and I am reminded of words from a favorite poem
by E. E. Cummings: “I thank you God
for most this amazing day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees; and a
blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural, which is
infinite, which is yes!” So,
what is new with you? One year ago Joyful Spirit Yoga studio was
new. We began the journey with a few
new mats, some ancient poses and a few new ways of thinking. New students and teachers have joined us on
our journey and continue to bring a wonderful newness to our practice. I
am truly grateful for each and every life who has crossed my path and brought
newness of some kind to my life, whether on a yoga journey or on some other
journey. Each encounter has helped me
to look inward and see myself a little more clearly – see the world a little
more clearly. E.
E. Cummings’ poem ends with the words, “now the ears of my ears awake, and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened.” It
is my hope that wherever we are on our path, you and I continue to learn from
each other and continue to open our eyes, awaken our ears and strive to create
a life that is new every day and is a reflection of the Love that lies within. May

is April 22. Let’s make every day
earth day! We
will be practicing Prithvi Mudra this month.
Prithvi Mudra is formed by joining the tips of the ring finger and the
thumb. The index, middle and little fingers
are kept straight. This
mudra helps to increase one’s strength, stamina and elegance and is said to
be more effective than vitamins. It
also helps improve memory power.
Regular practice of this mudra can change one’s inner-self and leads
to spirituality. The practice of this
mudra makes one energetic and encourages a sense of generosity,
thoughtfulness and kind-heartedness. |
