Joyful Day!
And
a Happy, Healthy New Year! Doesn’t
it feel great to start over? Begin again? Start anew?
And the journey begins right now – in what is perhaps an ordinary
moment. Remember that ordinary moments
can be awakened by the attention that we bring to them. In
this ordinary moment, I have been thinking about making some resolutions. Resolutions are basically positive
intentions designed to enhance our lives and/or effect certain positive
changes. One of my intentions this year is to invest
regularly in my most precious asset – which is my health. There
are 168 hours in a week, and it would be extremely beneficial to be willing
to give at least 3 of those to our body – to our health. If
we are able to only give ourselves one hour in any given week, think
positively, “I improved my life by spending this hour investing in my health;
when can/will I do it again?” Relish
every workout, whether it be a walk with the dog or moving through a favorite
yoga sequence. When we enjoy
something, we make time for it. Think
healthy. Let’s act as if we are
becoming more healthy with each passing day by the choices we make. Remember that the power of belief can be
enormously healing (placebo effect).
Our thoughts may be some of the best preventative medicine. We
know that chronic stress due to environmental and other toxins along with a
fast-paced lifestyle depresses our immune system. A mind/body study at Harvard University
some years ago revealed that every thought we have affects the immune
system. The study reported that some
of the biggest contributors to chronic stress are thoughts of helplessness,
self-criticism, self-judgment, and low self esteem. We can actually think ourselves well by
thinking well of ourselves! This
is not to say that if we only think healthy thoughts we will never become ill
– too many other factors (environment, toxins, aging body parts, etc) come
into play. However, with our awareness
of the mind/body connection, we can certainly improve our health by boosting our
immune system in as many ways as are possible, including positive thinking. C.
S. Lewis said, “We are what we believe we are.” May we be healthy. May we be compassionate. “May we be peaceful. May we live with ease of heart. May we live in joy.” (Rene Claussen’s, Memorial) May
we live this very moment – the one we are in right
now. May
Your Spirit Soar, Margie We
are adding a new class on Wednesday mornings at 9:45. Please come and join Karen for some
energizing vinyasa flow. More yoga,
more fun! Detox Flow Class Jan 12Join
us Saturday, January 12 at 10:45 a.m. for a purifying, Detox Flow class based
on Seane Corn’s detox flow sequence of first decompressing then compressing
internal organs to counter any sluggishness and help cleanse the body of
impurities and built-up toxins. It’s
sure to make you… er, um - sweat! Join us on Saturday, January 26 at
10:45 a.m. for FREE YOGA! All students and guests may attend this
class at no charge. Yoga Day USA was created in 1999 by Yoga Alliance to raise awareness of the
many benefits of yoga by offering free or low-cost yoga classes and workshops
around the country. Please join us in
recognizing this 9th annual celebration! Because we just can’t get enough
yoga, and because we had so much fun the last time (and because there are no
NFL playoff games on this date), we are scheduling another yoga with the ball
class this month! Bring your stability ball on
Sunday, Jan 27, 3:00 p.m. for some great yoga poses with the
ball. Guests are welcome to
attend. Be sure to bring a stability ball. Thank you, and definitely join us for some
fun! Gift Certificates Now AvailableLove
yoga? Love to give gifts? How about giving the gift of yoga! We now have gift certificates available for
purchase. Cash or checks are accepted
and may be made out to Joyful Spirit Yoga in the amount of a specific class pack
or in any dollar amount to be used at the studio. New Studio PolicyPlease
be aware that any class with fewer than 2 students attending will be
cancelled for that day. Thank you for
your understanding. Honey
is valued for its many healing properties as well as its use as a culinary
sweetener. Many of us have been eating
local honey on a daily basis to reduce or be free of allergies, but did you
know that honey can also help calm the mind and promote rejuvenating
sleep? In addition, Nature’s Remedies
reports that honey relieves indigestion and is used to treat cardiovascular
disease and respiratory complaints. A
thin coat of honey can be applied to the skin to disinfect and heal minor
skin wounds and chapped lips. Interestingly,
the bees act as a biological filter when making honey: if they come into contact with toxins, the
bees will die and thus do not bring pollutants into the hive. This
month, since many of us may be trying to detox, we will take a look at Apaan Mudra – formed by joining the
tip of the thumb to the tips of the middle and ring finger by applying gentle
pressure and the remaining fingers are kept straight. This
mudra can help purify the body. It
removes toxins from the body, helps to balance our rate of perspiration, relieves
constipation and may increase urination.
It can cure hiccups and can also bring low blood pressure back to
normal. It is also beneficial for
females during menstrual cycles as it reduces the pain and eases other
symptoms. |
